Garden of Love

Tulum-based Grupo Gitano, who has made their return to NYC with their summer pop-up, Garden of Love. The dramatic restaurant and mezcal bar brings a unique point of view to hospitality and the entire experience with its open, pared back, tropical, minimal approach to design and its modern Mexican cuisine.

Framed by the Freedom Tower and the downtown NYC skyline, guests are transported to the lush, tropical jungle of Tulum as they enter through through a wood pergola, punctuated with the iconic GITANO pink neon sign, onto a long, stone runway lined with 30-foot coconut palms.

The restaurant newly appointed Executive Chef, Antonio Maldonado, has revamped the menu by adding a variety of new fall dishes and drinks that take inspiration from his Mexican heritage, including Sopa De Tortilla Poblano, Truffle Tlayuda, Chipotle Albondigas, Cochinita Pibil & Hoja Santa, Hot Chocolate with Banks Rum & Toasted Marshmallow, Hot Hibiscus Tea with Mezcal and more.

Additionally, Founder and Owner, James Gardner, has made the space more comfortable for the cooler temperatures with a transparent terrarium, multiple heaters throughout, black and white curtains around the dining decks and custom-made fleece blankets embroidered with the pink Gitano monogram, which are also available for purchase.

Main Street Tavern

Kimika

Kimika, the new Japanese-Italian restaurant in Nolita from Erika Chou and Doron Wong of Rivers and Hills Hospitality Group, the team behind the popular Lower East Side Thai restaurant Wayla. Executive chef Christine Lau, most recently of Bar Chuko Izakaya, offers a menu that highlights seasonal, locally sourced produce and Japanese and Italian ingredients, from crispy flatbreads with Greenmarket toppings like heirloom tomatoes, summer squash, and shiso, to fresh seafood pastas. Kimika offers a bright and airy space for outdoor seating filled with lush greenery for socially distant dining or cocktails, in addition to takeout and delivery.

Midtown Social

located near Bryant Park.

This concept was created by Savory, a boutique, multifaceted hospitality company based in the heart of New York City, in response to the current challenges in the industry as a result of COVID-19. Though the offerings at Midtown Social differ from the company’s traditional fine dining catering, Chef Stephen Cardello has created a street food inspired menu, that is rooted with the same philosophy and passion in which Savory was built.

Open Monday — Friday from 11am — 9pm, their craveable menu is perfect for outdoor dining or a picnic in the park. From Tacos to Hawaiian Hot Dogs, stand out menu items include Chili Citrus Shrimp Tacos, Spicy Fried Chicken Sandwich, Doctored Fries, disco style finished with mole, cotija, truffle parmesan and kimchi, the Choco Taco for dessert and many more outdoor eats. You will also find specialty cocktails and drink specials such as a $4 Beer, with purchase of two or more sliders or tacos, and Wine Wednesday, where all bottles of wine are 35% off.

Tzarevna

If you don’t mind going downtown, you should checkout the Lower East Side spot Tzarevna’s new menu and a fresh, contemporary Russian restaurant serving classic dishes with organic ingredients.

Expect authentic dishes with a modern influence including organic Cornish Hen done in the ‘tabaka’ style, served with a tkemeli sour plum sauce to Duck Shashlyk with pistachio puree, charred onions, pomegranate molasses. Classic housemade zakuski boards will be available including a house-cured fish board featuring seasonal varieties, served with bliny, roe, and smetana.

During the pandemic, the owners, who are also the chef, discovered while trying out some fusion dishes when working out the new menu and interactions with customers, that the guests loved Tzarevna’s dishes that were traditionally Russian.

With so few options of authentic Russian dining in Manhattan, and without the usual decor tropes, they want Tzarevna to be contemporary Russian food, culture, and aesthetic.

Extra Virgin

Extra Virgin has been serving the West Village for 16 years, showcasing a menu of imaginative Italian, French and Mediterranean dishes in an energetic environment where hospitality and attentive service is the top priority. Owned by Michele Gaton, (General Manager of Union Square’s Coffee Shop) and partner Executive Chef Joey Fortunato (Manhattan Ocean Club, Layla, Picholine, Tribeca Grill), Extra Virgin was opened quite serendipitously, as the pair only had one day to seal the deal after finding the perfect location. The duo rolled up their sleeves and poured their hearts into creating what has become a quintessential neighborhood eatery.

With the loving support of the community that the team has faithfully served for almost two decades, the restaurant has been able to remain open throughout the entirety of this pandemic, feeding the local frontline workers and pioneering the reopening phase of the West Village restaurants. Michele and Chef Fortunato have learned the ins and outs of how to run a business during this trying time. They have officially opened outdoor seating for Phase Two and are already prepared for Phase Three with a restaurant design using clear glass partitions between the tables to ensure the safety of their diners.

Owner Michele Gaton is currently championing a petition to help her beloved block. She is asking Mayor de Blasio to close West 4th Street between Charles and Perry Street to traffic and open it up to help accommodate extra outdoor space for restaurants and businesses. Michele strongly believes this will not only help to keep customers and residents safe, but also assist with the businesses that have taken a severe economic hit during this time. The petition can be found on Change.org here: https://www.change.org/p/mayor-bill-de-blasio-west-4th.

With the space that the restaurant does have Michele has created an intimate outdoor dining area with up to 24 seats currently, in which the tables are set six feet apart and cute little trees are expertly placed between each. The ordering system has also changed and will now allow guests to scan a QR code with their phone, bringing up a digital menu and ordering with a waiter to eliminate the need for hard copy menus. To assist with the weekend crowds, the team has also brought on a security guard to ensure the safety of their patrons.

The Stand Comedy Club and Restaurant

The Stand will be transitioning from outdoor to indoor dining in October. With about 9600 square feet of space, The Stand is confident they can safely conduct service with adequate space. They will most likely be seating what they are seating now outdoors, which is around 40 to 50 patrons.

Though they are appreciative of the effort by Governor Cuomo, the majority of their venue unfortunately remains dark. Live comedy is still not allowed indoors or out.

“We are urging our elected officials to join State Senator Michael Gianaris and Senator Chuck Schumer in the fight to Save our Stages. We have joined the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) and our local NY chapter NYIVA to bring as much attention to this fight. Without government help we will not only be in danger of closing but so will thousands of venues across the country. These venues employee thousands of New Yorkers and Americans for the Governor to not address a huge industry desperately needing attention was disappointing. Our hope is that he now turns his sights on getting us all back in business. Please visit saveourstages.com for more information.” — Cris + Paul Italia

Cris Italia also recently published a rebuttal,”A Challenge to Save New York” to the New York Post’s “NYC is dead forever — here’s why: James Altucher” sharing his thoughts on the current state of New York.

Kyma

Outdoor dining is here to stay and the newly reopened Kyma in Flatiron (15 W 18th St) has created the perfect outdoor garden setup in partnership with Chateau D’esclans’ Whispering Angel to take you from summer to Fall (while satiating some of your travel wanderlust too!).

Just in time for the harvest in Provence, Kyma has created an outdoor dining patio that allows guests to feel like they have been transported to their favorite European getaway.

The patio embraces the vibe of the South of France, utilizing vines not only to help create safe social distancing setups, but to symbolize the grapes and wine making process, while incorporating the regions signature blue hydrangea. Twinkle lights, leafy palms, lavender, and various bottles of Whispering Angel were incorporated into the installation to add to the whimsical romance of the setup.

Cocktails including the Roséy Lemonade (Whispering Angel, lemonade, lavender syrup, mint, and raspberry) accompany the elevated Greek comfort food that Kyma patrons have come to love including Kyma Chips (crispy slices of zucchini and eggplant with tzatziki), Tomato Salad (Kyma’s classic Greek salad), Grilled Octopus (with roasted peppers, onions and capers), Lamb Chops and Branzino.

Kyma’s outdoor garden will be open through winter, Tuesday — Thursday from 4:30pm-10pm, and Friday + Saturday: 4:30pm-11pm. DJ Nico Blu spins Friday and Saturdays from 7–11pm, playing a mix of Greek and pop music.

O3waterworks takes that even a step further with the release of their new all natural on-demand spray sanitizer that turns everyday tap water into a non-toxic, chlorine free & alcohol-free cleaner (free of fragrances + dyes!) that is refillable and a planet friendly alternative to the countless cleaning products stowed under our kitchen sinks.

The Sanitizing Spray Bottle priced at $199 is ideal for small-scale home applications such as: kitchen counters, exercise equipment, meat + veggies, face masks, pets, kids toys and much more — lasting 3–5 years with 600+ refills, saving a household approximately $700 a year! Did we also mention it also kills odors, mildews + mold and has been proven to eliminate 99.9% of harmful germs and pathogens in 30 seconds, as well as other viruses such as E. coli, Salmonella, Klebsiella and pneumoniae.
